Two sides that played out one of the most dramatic Champions League finals of all-time meet in this round of the Champions League, as Chelsea will welcome Bayern Munich to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will be looking to rediscover the spirit of 2012 as Bayern Munich will come to South London as the hot favourites for progression. That Champions League final eight years ago remains their only success in this competition, and it was even more memorable as it took place at Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
Frank Lampard’s side narrowly got through to this stage of the competition after squeaking through in their group which also included Valencia and Ajax. Defensively, the Blues have been weak throughout the season to this point, and that will only give Bayern optimism that they could get joy in this first leg. Chelsea have conceded 37 goals in the Premier League so far this season, and that is the worst record out of all the sides competing for a top-four finish. They will need to be stronger this week if they are to have any chance of progression.
Bayern will know that this first leg will be vital to their chances of progression. A win or score draw would put them in the driving seat, and judging by their recent form, they would appear more than capable of doing that. They are unbeaten over their last five fixtures, as they have won four and drawn once. They are currently top of the Bundesliga, and they will still have memories of their 7-2 success over Tottenham Hotspur when they travel back to England. Robert Lewandowski has been in excellent form this season, as he has already scored ten goals in the Champions League. He would be good value to extend that record on Tuesday.
